W.H. Mathews

 

W.H. Mathews re-entered the military in January, 1953, during the Korean War, but this time opted for the Air Force which had been formed after the close of WWII.

After re-enlisting he was assigned to Kessler AFB, Boluxi, MS; then was sent to Seoul City AFB, South Korea in August, 1953. His mother was diagnosed with cancer in April, 1954 and he was re-assigned to Greenville AFB in Mississippi so that he could be closer to her in her last days (she died in June of that year).

Upon entering the Air Force, W.H. became an electrician and worked in the Base Engineering Departments at his duty stations. Duty stations include: Kessler AFB, Seoul City, AFB, Greenville AFB, Goodfellow AFB, Tiapai AFB, Eglin AFB, Aviano AFB, McGuire AFB.

While stationed at Tiapai AFB, W.H. was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service in February, 1961.

During this duty at Aviano AFB he held the billet of 1st Sargeant with the Base Engineers.

After 23+ years service he retired in July, 1968 at McGuire AFB and settled his family in Memphis, Tennessee..
