Mathews Military History

The Mathews brothers found military life to be an escape from their rural upbringing and the misery of the great depression. It also provided an avenue for travel and adventure. The three fun loving young men thrived in the pre-WWII military with two entering the Navy (Arthur - 1927, W.H. - 1938) and the youngest (after lying about his age) enlisting in the Marine Corps (Guy - 1937). All three served with distinction during the Second World War as well as the Korean War, making the military their careers.

Arthur Chester Mathews enlisted in the Navy in 1927, at the age of 18. His monetary assistance to his family, and tales of his travels and adventures impressed his younger brothers still at home in the community of Houston, Mississippi. Working in CCC camps during the depression, W.H. and Guy got a taste of what military life might be like, and enlisted in the armed forces. Click on the name to review their military histories.
