Ashcraft's Cav. Regt. MS CSA (Apparently organized spring 1864 by consolidation of 2nd Cav. Bn. and 3rd Cav. Bn., State Troops, Col. Thomas C. Ashcraft; consolidated March 20, 1865 with 2nd Cav. Regt., State Troops and Ham's Cav. Regt. and designated Ashcraft's-Ham's-Lowry's Cav. Regt. Consolidated) Raised primarily from Pontotoc and Itawamba Co.'s.

1st Regt MS Light Artillery, Co. F "Confederate Guards Artillery" raised in Pontotoc, MS. -- Captain Grisham's battery was ordered from Mississippi to Wilmington, N.C., in October, 1861. The battery was included in the brigade of Gen. Samuel G. French, late Chief of Ordinance of Mississippi, who was assigned command of the district of Pamlico in North Carolina, March 17, 1862. The returns show the battery under the command of Captain Bradford, in Branch's artillery battalion, Department of North Carolina.

John Thomas served in Ashcraft's Regiment MS Cavalry CSA - but first he joined Bradford's Battery J. O. Grisham Commanding Company April 1861. He was sent to Cape Fear NC to guard coast. He served 11 months to April 1862 & was discharged because of age (39) effective July 17, 1862.
Two months later 9-26-62 he enlisted Ashcraft's Regiment Thomas C. Ashcraft Commanding. Capt. A. B. Cole Commanding Co. C. 
April 1863 he is a private under John T. Weatherall Capt. Commanding Mounted Troops 
December 1863 back with Capt. A. B. Cole Co. C 
April 1864 he is a 5th Sgt. under Capt. S. H. Wood. 
June 1864 he is 5th Sgt under Capt. L. D. Sandridge. 
All of these immediate commanders reported to Lt. Col. Ashcraft. 
In May 1864 Ashcrafts Regiment was consolidated in Confederate service commanded by General Samuel J. Gholson who had been the brigade commander from the beginning. Moving into Confederate service means the unit/units can move interstate vs intrastate, which had been the case until May 1864.

Tupelo, MS 5-22-1864 Brig. Gen. Samuel J. Gholson is assigned to duty as commanding officer of the brigade of MS state troops recently turned over the the state of MS to the Confederate States and now commanded by Col. John McGuirk. Brig Gen Gholson will report for duty with his brigade to Brig. Gen. J. R. Chalmers Commanding First DIVN. by order Maj. Gen. Forrest (signed) W. H. Brand Asst. Adj. Gen 
Because this happened they moved to Atlanta and the battle of Ezra's Church where gg-grandfather was wounded.
